One of the greatest sources of plumbing problems and home and business repair expenses can be in relation to clogged drains. Often times, clogged drainage issues will sneak up on a home or business owner, and a minor oversight can grow into a huge problem overnight.
No one ever clogs their own drains on purpose, but there are quite a few things we can all do to eliminate clogs from happening. First of all, you should always do your best to make sure that none of the following items are able to gather or enter your drain:
- Cooking grease
- Coffee grounds
- Soap scum
One way to assist in this endeavor would be to add drain covers or gates, which help to keep the harmful elements in the basin and out of the drain.
Another way to keep you clog clear is to simply not keep certain types of elements anywhere near the sink. If possible, try and always keep your cooking grease completely separated and stored in small containers that can be disposed of later. Do the same with your coffee grounds.
Here are some other easy things you can do to maintain your drains and keep things flowing:
- After use, run hot water through the drain for a short amount of time to help break down any remnants and to push them through the system.
- Place a handful of baking soda in your drain and then follow the baking soda with hot water. This will take care of any particles that hot water is unable to resolve on its own.
- Pour 1 cup of vinegar down your drain and then let the vinegar sit for 30 minutes, giving it time to do its work. After waiting, follow up with very hot water to finish flushing the remnants through the drainage system.
